NEW YORK — The Yankees placed pitcher Bartolo Colon on the disabled list Sunday with a strained right hamstring, the latest blow to an already ailing starting rotation.
Colon pulled up lame while covering first base on a routine grounder in a 4-0 win over the Indians on Saturday. He had an MRI exam after the game and the decision was made to put the veteran on the DL.
The 38-year-old Colon is 5-3 with a 3.10 ERA, helping solidify a rotation that has lost Phil Hughes to a shoulder injury for most of the season.
The Yankees then brought back outfielder Chris Dickerson from Triple-A Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre just two days after they optioned him.
Mauer close to returning
MINNEAPOLIS — Catcher Joe Mauer could return to the Twins this week.
The four-time all-star and three-time American League batting champion was catching for Single-A Fort Myers on Sunday and was set to do the same today and possibly Tuesday too.
Footnotes.
The Padres are expected to place starting right- handed pitchers Aaron Harang and Dustin Moseley on the 15-day DL within the next two days.
• The Rangers placed catcher and first baseman Mike Napoli on the 15-day DL because of a strained oblique muscle on his left side and catcher Taylor Teagarden was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
• Rangers left-hander Matt Harrison left his start at Minnesota after being hit by a line drive above his pitching elbow, resulting in a bruised triceps muscle.
• The Tigers plan to activate Magglio Ordoñez, out since May 10 because of weakness in his surgically repaired right ankle, from the DL today.
