Customers tried to stop a robber with an assault rifle from leaving a Wheat Ridge cell phone store this morning, but the man shot through the glass door and made his escape.

“We’re really lucky no one was injured or killed,” said Wheat Ridge police spokeswoman Lisa Stigall.

The man walked into the Advantage Wireless store in the Safeway shopping center at 3914 Wadsworth Blvd. at about 11:30 a.m. and demanded cash.

As he tried to leave, two people held the door to keep him inside. A scuffle ensued inside the store, and a woman was hit in the head with the gun. She was treated by paramedics at the store, but wasn’t seriously hurt, Stigall said.

The man got away when he fired at least one shot, scattering glass and bystanders.

Descriptions of the man run the gamut, including different races, Stigall said, but authorities are reviewing surveillance tape for a clear image, she said.

The gun was described as a military style M-15 rifle, she said.

Immediately after the man fled, witnesses saw a black sport-utility vehicle speed away from the shopping center, she said, but no one has said they saw him get in it.

Anyone who has information about the man’s identity and whereabouts can call Wheat Ridge police at 303-237-2220.
