Forty years after President Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs,” more than 100 people are expected in Denver to join national protests against the effort to eliminate drug use.
The Drug Policy Alliance of Colorado and the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition are gathering Friday afternoon to argue that the “war” has wasted money and put people behind bars unnecessarily.
Among the speakers is Mike Krause of the right-leaning Independence Institute.
Similar protests were planned in cities across the country. Protesters say public money to prosecute drug crimes could be better spent on treatment.
