DENVER—Crews are trying to make gains on a wildfire that’s now burning on about six square miles in the southern Colorado mountains.

Fire managers want to be more aggressive in suppressing the fire near Westcliffe Friday morning before the humidity is expected to drop and winds pick up.

More evacuations were ordered Thursday because gusty, erratic winds helped spread the Duckett fire. About 130 homes in both Custer and Fremont counties have been evacuated because of the fire.

It started Sunday in the San Isabel National Forest and is 10 percent contained. Authorities suspect it was human-caused.

Firefighters say extremely dry fuels, steep inaccessible terrain and fire behavior are hampering suppression efforts.
