Several people fled from a crashed, stolen vehicle in Colorado Springs early Tuesday morning but one of the suspects left something behind, which allowed investigators to track a culprit, police said.

The incident happened at about 12:05 a.m. in the 1300 block of Sanderson Way, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department crime blotter.

Witnesses told officers that “multiple suspects” ran from a vehicle after a traffic crash. Officers at the scene determined the vehicle involved had been reported stolen. A police dog was brought in but was unable to track the robbers.

“During a search of the stolen vehicle, officers located items that were left behind by one of the suspects,” police said.

Officers used the items to catch up with a suspect, a juvenile, who was “taken into custody.”

The boy is being investigated for “numerous other vehicle break-ins,” police said.
