Prosecutors said today that 21-year-old Brittany M. Gonzales was driving drunk Saturday evening when she hit an 11-year-old bicyclist and then drove off.

She did, however, stop long enough to retrieve a hubcap after striking the child, who was seriously injured, at Irving Street and Dakota Avenue at about 8 p.m., according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

A witness gave police enough information to find the car about two blocks away near Alaska Place and Knox Court, where Gonzales was arrested shortly after the crash.

Vehicular assault, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident and drunken driving charges were filed against Gonzales today.

She is free on a $50,000 bond and has a July 6 court date.

This article has been corrected in this online archive. The original press release from the District Attorney’s Office incorrectly stated the age of the child involved in the incident.
