Police arrested a Colorado Springs man Thursday night after he attempted to chase down vehicles on the expressway.
At 10:27 p.m., officers responded to a report about a traffic hazard near Astrozon Boulevard and Hancock Expressway, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department’s crime blotter.
Officers discovered that a man was in the middle of the street flagging down and chasing after vehicles. Several witnesses reported that the man was possibly trying to carjack a vehicle, police said.
An officer spotted the man harassing a transient in the parking lot of the King Soopers at 2910 S. Academy Blvd.
When the officer contacted the man, he fled south down a grassy hill toward Hancock Expressway.
The man jumped off an electrical box recessed into the hill and landed face first on the pavement.
The officer immediately began blocking traffic on the road to keep vehicles from hitting the suspect, who was lying in the street.
While the officer was blocking traffic, the man got up and started running across the expressway.
After crossing the busy road the man ran into a parked vehicle and was knocked down. When the man got up and attempted to run away, he collided with a fence.
The officer was able to get close enough to use his Taser.
The suspect had facial injuries and several cuts and scrapes. He was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and excessive alcohol content.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was cited for harassment, obstruction of a police officer and disorderly conduct.
