We’ve had on our Mile Marker “wish list” ever since we launched the series this past January. Pug, the one-time Chicago carpenter who now hangs his hat in Austin, is one of our favorite traditional folk artists on the circuit today. His lyrics are honest, his voice is smooth and soulful and the instrumentation is subtle. Pug doesn’t get in the way of his songs — and his swing through had more than a few of us holding our breath so as not to disturb the delicate soundwaves in the room. “Now I’m sellin’ saws and hammers / For half of what they’re worth / I’m dreamin’ for a living / I got no time for work / It’s gettin’ hard,” Pug sings on “In The Meantime.” You get the feeling that the songs are more of an outlet than anything else for Pug. And after , it’s safe to say that such a “living” is more a reality than dream at this point.
