Proposed federal legislation would require wireless carriers to provide more details about their 4G mobile broadband networks, including coverage area and guaranteed minimum speeds.

“Theoretical peak speeds and actual speeds experienced by consumers vary widely across technologies and service providers,” states the Next Generation Disclosure Act, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif. “Consumers need accurate information before selecting a provider of wireless mobile broadband service.”

CTIA, a trade association representing the wireless industry, said it is “concerned that the bill proposes to add a new layer of regulation to a new and exciting set of services, while ignoring the fact that wireless is an inherently complex and dynamic environment in which network speeds can vary depending on a wide variety of factors.” Andy Vuong, The Denver Post
