ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—Colorado congresswoman Diana DeGette is again sponsoring legislation promoting embryonic stem cell research.
The Democrat announced her bill Wednesday at Craig Hospital in Englewood. The suburban hospital is a nationally known rehabilitation and research center specializing in spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.
Hospital officials joined DeGette in support of the research.
DeGette has long championed federal support for the research. The cells can be turned into any tissue of the body, raising hopes that one day they can be used to cure spinal cord injuries and other ailments.
But some in Congress oppose federal funding because the cells come from excess embryos created during in vitro fertilization therapies. They say it’s another form of abortion because the embryos must be killed.
President Barack Obama eased restraints on the research.
