Denver Outlaws attackman Connor Martin could, in fact, quit his day job.
The second-year Outlaws player has a YouTube channel, “Con Bro Chill,” which has more than 2.5 million hits. The channel is a compilation of silly skits and songs created by Martin, who describes himself as an “amateur goofball,” and his brother, Samm.
Martin, who scored a career- high five goals last week against the Long Island Lizards, managed only one in the Outlaws’ 15-12 loss to the Boston Cannons before a celebratory fireworks show Sunday night at Invesco Field at Mile High.
The win put Boston (6-1) a game ahead of Denver (5-2) atop the Major League Lacrosse standings. The Outlaws set a league attendance record with 27,184, easily topping the previous record of 23,433, set in Denver on fireworks night in 2010.
“I don’t know why,” Martin said of making YouTube videos. “We just went with it, and it started getting more and more out of control.”
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Martin is one of only four players to play professionally with a club lacrosse background. He played at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., a school that doesn’t field a varsity team.
His shot in the first quarter was a nonchalant, behind-the-back toss over his left shoulder that landed out of reach of Boston goalie Jordan Burke.
“It was a little weird looking, but I got lucky that it went in,” said Martin, who will turn 23 in two weeks.
He made his National Lacrosse League debut with the Colorado Mammoth before being drafted in the seventh round by Denver in 2011.
Boston ran out to an early 3-0 lead before Denver scored seven straight goals. But Boston retaliated in the second half, outscoring Denver 12-5.
Denver had six penalties compared with Boston’s two in the second half, giving the Cannons a chance to capitalize on a string of power-play opportunities.
“They pressed out on defense and kind of took us out of our game,” Martin said.
The Outlaws’ next game is in Denver against the Rochester Rattlers on July 16.
