Lakewood Police arrested a 17-year-old male early Sunday morning on charges of attempted first-degree murder.

Police responded to a call around 2 a.m. for a fight involving 15 to 20 people, at the 1600 block of South Cape Way, according to a police statement.

When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy who had been shot in the back. He was rushed to Saint Anthony’s Hospital and is expected to survive, the police said.

Police stopped a car leaving the area of the fight and arrested a 17-year-old male after they detained the people in the car for an investigation. The alledged assailant was also charged with juvenile possession of a handgun.

The investigation is still underway, but police believe the incident may have been gang-related, said spokesman Steve Hipwell.

The names of the victim and the suspect have not been released due to their age.
