Forty dogs rescued from the home of an animal hoarder in California arrived in Denver this morning and were placed in shelters.
The dogs were among 150 mixed-breed dogs taken from an overcrowded property in Lucerne Valley, Calif., according to the Humane Society of the United States.
“This is an unfortunate case of an animal lover and rescuer who became overwhelmed, had limited resources and simply has more animals than she can properly care for,” Adam Parascandola, director of animal cruelty issues for the Humane Society, said in press release.
Twenty of the dogs have been placed with the Dumb Friends League, 10 with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, and 10 with the Longmont Humane Society.
The dogs will receive medical and behavior evaluations over the next few days, and some may be placed in foster care for socialization, according to Michelle Ray, spokeswoman for the Dumb Friends League.
The Humane Society rescued the dogs after being contacted by producers of The Animal Planet series “Confessions: Animal Hoarding.
The owner voluntarily surrendered the dogs.
