Re: “Don’t let the stock show get away,” July 6 guest commentary.
I am writing to clarify Denver’s position on the potential relocation of the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) to Aurora.
Denver officials have been involved in discussions with the NWSS for more than seven years regarding the NWSS’s desire to expand from its current 100-acre site to a 300-acre site. Because of our mutual desire that the stock show remain in Denver, we have diligently searched over these many years for an appropriate location within city boundaries.
As of today, no decisions have been made to release the NWSS from its current lease; indeed, the NWSS has not yet requested that Denver release it from its obligation to remain at the current site until 2040.
I agree with former Mayor Wellington Webb that Denver and Aurora residents and city officials must consider the future of the stock show very carefully over the coming months. I can assure you that Denver city officials and the NWSS are committed to a full public process before any decisions are made to release the NWSS from its obligations to Denver.
The potential project involving the NWSS and Gaylord Entertainment at the Highpoint site near Denver International Airport may create jobs and result in a positive economic benefit for our region.
Denver’s decision to sign a Regional Tourism Act (RTA) joint application with Aurora was a strategic move to ensure that Denver remains at the negotiating table for possible state funding for this project. Participating in the RTA application does not compromise Denver’s ability to keep the stock show in Denver should that be the collective decision of our community.
It is important to note that Denver can modify or withdraw its RTA application at any time in the months ahead, and that Denver continues to retain all of its options, including its legal right to hold the NWSS to its current lease.
I made the decision to sign the RTA application with the knowledge and support of Mayor- elect Michael Hancock.
Guillermo (Bill) V. Vidal is mayor of Denver.
