DURANGO, Colo.—Company officials are blaming red tape from state authorities for delaying the reopening of a historic gold and silver mine near Hesperus.

Wildcat Mining Corp. says state authorities are making it impossible to reopen the Mayday mine without repairing at least one of the portals into the mine complex and entering the facility. Both requirements are prohibited under an ongoing cease-and-desist order from the state.

The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety will make its recommendation to the mining board about whether to approve the permit application on or before Aug. 23, according to the Durango Herald.
