A Connecticut judge is expected to hear an update on the psychiatric evaluation of a man charged with killing a Wesleyan University student at a bookstore near the campus in 2009.

Stephen P. Morgan is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on Tuesday. He has pleaded not guilty to murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Johanna Justin-Jinich of Timnath, Colo. His lawyers are expected to mount an insanity defense.

The case against the 31-year-old Marblehead, Mass., native has stalled because of delayed psychiatric testing. An expert hired by the state to evaluate Morgan became ill and couldn’t finish the report, forcing State’s Attorney Timothy Liston to hire another psychiatrist earlier this year.

Liston says the case can’t move forward until the mental health evaluation is finished.
