U.S. 40 reopened tonight after it had been closed for hours in both directions over Berthoud Pass, as crews work to clean up a hazardous material spill.
At 12:08 p.m., a semi-truck hauling gasoline and diesel rolled onto its side on the east side of the mountain pass, said Trooper Nate Reid, a spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.
The two trailer compartments are leaking fuel onto the mountain highway, and a hazardous materials crew is working to stop and contain the spill.
The compartments were hauling 7,000 gallons of fuel. The amount of fuel that spilled onto the highway was not immediately known, Reid said.
The highway was reopened about 8:20 p.m. Crews had to transfer the fuel from the damaged tankers to a new container before they could upright the semi-truck and remove it from the road.
No injuries were reported and no additional vehicles were involved in the accident.
What caused the semi-truck to roll is still under investigation, Reid said.
