Uvex Funride ski helmets have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada because the helmet provides insufficient shock absorption and resistance to penetration, the watchdog agencies announced today.
The helmet poses a potential “head injury hazard,” the agencies warned.
So far no injuries have been reported and Uvex is fully cooperating and recalling the helmet.
The Uvex Funride ski helmets come in two adult sizes XS-M and L-XL. They were sold in retail ski shops and ski rental stores nationwide from January 2009 to April 2011 for $99.
Uvex said on its website that during an internal quality control inspection, it became aware that some of the Funride ski helmets might have a manufacturing defect.
“This defect may lead to insufficient shock absorption and resistance to penetration in areas of the helmet which are construction-conditioned critical and cause serious injuries when failing,” said the company.
Uvex added that it takes its claim of “Protecting People” seriously and people who own a Uvex Funride ski helmet should stop using it immediately.
The company says the helmet should be returned to the retailer where it was purchased for a full refund of the purchase price.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the helmets were manufactured in China.
