An ill teenager from Castle Rock was rescued by a team of rangers in Rocky Mountain National Park Sunday night.

The 15-year-old, who was not named, was taking part in a backpacking program affiliated with Camp Timberline. He was camping with a group at North Inlet campsite about 6.5 miles from the North Inlet Trailhead on the west side of the park.

He fell ill Saturday night and when he didn’t improve Sunday, rangers were called at about 4 p.m., according to the National Park Service.

Rangers provided medical care at the campsite until a ranger with a horse arrived and brought the boy down, a nearly 2.5-hour trek to the trailhead, according to a park spokeswoman. He was taken by ambulance to Granby Medical Clinic.

The boy apparently had altitude sickness, dehydration and possibly exhaustion, said Dan Brass, a spokesman for the Christian summer camp for kids ages 7 to 18.

None of the other campers were affected and the boy recovered after being checked out at a hospital, he said.
