MEXICO CITY — The mayor of Ciudad Juárez says thousands of federal police officers sent to help patrol the violent border city will start leaving in September.
Hector Murguia says the decision to withdraw 5,000 federal agents was made by federal officials who say the city is under control. Federal police took over the city in April 2010 after soldiers were withdrawn amid abuse-of-power accusations. The city’s police officers were accused of working for drug cartels fighting for control of the city. More than 6,000 people have been killed since 2008, but homicides began declining this year.
Elsewhere in Mexico on Tuesday, a crime reporter said to have been looking into the recent execution slaying of her editor was found dead.
The body of Yolanda Ordaz de la Cruz was dumped on a street in the city of Veracruz, on Mexico’s eastern coast, two days after she was kidnapped by unknown assailants, according to the newspaper, Notiver.
