GYPSUM, Colo.—A woman who the American Civil Liberties Union says was wrongly denied a post office box in Gypsum now has one.

The ACLU says Griselda Duarte had tried getting a post office box by presenting a U.S. immigration visa and a Mexican election document with her photo on it but was wrongly told she needed to show a locally issued ID.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman Al DeSarro says what happened was “an unfortunate misunderstanding and confusion.”

The ACLU said Tuesday that the U.S. Postal Service has since reminded Gypsum workers that photo identifications issued by the U.S. or foreign governments are acceptable. That includes foreign federal election cards and passports.

The ACLU says post office boxes are necessary in Gypsum because home mail delivery isn’t provided in the mountain town.
