Greeley officials this week are tackling police and firefighters’ union contracts that call for higher wages across the board for 2012, but the contracts will run in shorter spurts than normal.
Greeley officials began negotiating with the city’s police union Monday, and they have 30 days to reach a deal on the contract.
The resounding theme for the contracts, as well as all city employees, is raises. While the council deals with raises for the unions, who all gave up their raises in 2010, they also will soon be contemplating more for general employees in 2012.
“Obviously, the general employees and the union employees in 2010 all helped out in balancing the budget by forgoing increases to their pay,” said City Manager Roy Otto. “The council is seeing us slowly coming out of this (recession) and would like to get back into a pattern where folks are” getting raises.
