STANFORD, Calif. — Two days after returning from the world swimming championships in Shanghai with three gold medals, a silver and a bronze in tow, Colorado’s Missy Franklin is adding to her collection.

The Regis Jesuit High School junior-to-be won the 100-meter backstroke Wednesday at the U.S. national championships with the fifth-fastest time in the world this year. The 16-year-old phenom touched in 59.18 seconds to win her first national title.

“I definitely did want to break 59, but being that close I’m still really happy with it,” Franklin said. “It sets me up well for next year. There’s still a lot I can improve on and that race kind of helped me out and showed me what I can do better.”

Rachel Bootsma was second at 59.65.

Notre Dame reinstates receiver Floyd

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Michael Floyd, who has caught more touchdown passes (28) than any player in Notre Dame’s history, was reinstated to the team 4 1/2 months after the receiver was arrested for drunken driving.

• Hueytown (Ala.) High School quarterback Jameis Winston, rated one of the nation’s top prospects, said he will sign with Florida State next year.

• Oregon State flanker James Rodgers has been cleared to practice in a “limited fashion” after two knee surgeries.

Blackhawks, Sharp agree to five-year extension

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks and forward Patrick Sharp agreed to five-year contract extension. Sharp, 29, tied for eighth in the league with a team- leading 34 goals and was third on the club with a career-high 71 points.

• The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Colin White to a one-year contract a day after he was waived by the New Jersey Devils.

• An arbitrator awarded Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber $7.5 million for the 2011-12 season.

• The St. Louis Blues will be without winger David Perron, who has been sidelined with a concussion, for training camp and the start of the regular season.

• Former NHL coach Ted Nolan was hired to lead Latvia’s national team.

McIlroy could get carded

AKRON, Ohio — U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy said he was leaning toward taking up his PGA Tour card next season, meaning he would play at least 15 events on the PGA Tour in 2012.
