OAKLAND, Calif. — A trip to visit relatives and go to a club turned tragic Saturday when a 25-year-old mother was killed and her aunt wounded after they accidentally were caught in a shootout between rival groups, police said.

Killed was Lashawna Candies. The name of her 34-year- old aunt, who police said lived with Candies, wasn’t released.

Candies and her aunt had visited relatives Friday and, after finding a club was closed, decided to drive to San Francisco, said police Sgt. Steve Nowak. They turned onto a street at 1:30 a.m. when a gun battle erupted between rival groups, Nowak said.

Their car was riddled by gunfire, and the aunt was able to drive a block before sideswiping two parked cars and crashing into a curb. Candies was pronounced dead at the scene. The aunt was taken to a hospital with a hand wound.
