AVON, Colo.—The Eagle River Fire Protection District plans to ask voters in November to approve a temporary mill levy to replace about $1.7 million in lost property tax revenues due to lower assessed property values in the district.

The annual tax revenues had been about $7 million.

The district’s board of directors says the temporary mill levy would be in addition to an existing mill levy, with total collections capped by the amount of revenues collected this year. The temporary mill levy would ratchet down as property values recover. It would expire in 2019.

The district has tried to reduce expenses by cutting management positions, restructuring employee benefits and freezing wages for 2010 and 2011. The district serves an area that includes Avon, Beaver Creek, Eagle-Vail, Edwards and Minturn.
