A piece of land off a tributary to the Big Thompson River is finding its way back to the family that owned it during the deadly 1976 flood.
The Larimer County commissioners agreed Tuesday to sell the sliver of land to the Bartels family for $10,750 as part of its quest to part with county-owned parcels along the river. Because the section of land is not conducive to fishing, the county did not retain public access as a condition of the sale.
Access for fishermen and women, bird watchers and other nature lovers, however, will remain for two other parcels the county acquired after the flood — one which will be sold and the other kept and maintained as county land.
The Parks Advisory Board on Tuesday advised land agent Charlie Johnson to negotiate the sale of some parcels near the bridge where the North Fork and main portion of the Big Thompson River meet near Drake, keeping river access for recreation, and decided not to sell another large piece of riverfront land on Glen Haven Road.
