Voters will face a ballot question this November that will ask for a temporary mill levy increase for the Eagle River Fire Protection District — an increase the district says is critical to maintaining current levels of public safety.

District Fire Chief Charlie Moore said up to two fire stations could potentially close if the increase fails. He said there could also be up to a 50 percent reduction in on-duty staff should the measure fail.

“We don’t know what stations or how many firefighters,” Moore said. “But we do know that a $1.7 million loss would have a significant effect.”

The $1.7 million loss is due to the lower assessed valuation of real estate in the district that has reduced the district’s annual tax revenues from $7 million to $5.3 million.
