Torch carriers of the “Rock en Español” genre, , are used to playing bullrings with throngs of fans waving Mexican flags in adoration. Last night they played the quaint to a sold out crowd that waved phones and cameras instead.

The formula for the quartet is very easy because the genre is reminiscent of the Brit-rock heyday thatap unmistakable upon first listen. The fact that Phill Vinall (Pulp/Placebo) has produced two of their albums should come as no surprise.

The quartet started early with the fist pumping “Vía Láctea” that immediately had everyone within sight reaching for their cell phones to capture the sonic boom coming from the tiny Bluebird stage. The moody vocals from León Larregui seemed edgier this evening with guitarist Sergio Acosta slowing things down on “Miel” and “Corazón Atómico.”

The Chilangos are in current support of their latest release, an “MTV Unplugged” session that plays like a best of list with the obvious stripped down takes. The crowd got a taste of the session when the guys stripped down for a moving take on “Poli Love.” It was only time before the crowd participated in a sing-along and anxious fans got their chance with “Nada.” A track worth noting that has been recorded with the legendary Spanish vocalist of Heroes del Silencio fame, Enrique Bunbury. The night came full circle when “Fotosíntesis” subtly reminded me with all of their familiarity why I fell in love with ܴé in the first place.
