A man led a Colorado State Patrol trooper on a 100-mph chase this afternoon after he allegedly committed a hit-and-run.
Troopers received a call mid-afternoon saying that two cars collided on Interstate 25 northbound near Colorado Springs. Both drivers pulled over, and then one fled.
A witness called for help and kept his eyes on the fleeing vehicle, feeding updates to troopers, said Sgt. Mike Baker.
A trooper found the car near Castle Rock and pulled it over. When the trooper got out of his car, the driver sped away and the chase began, Baker said.
The driver raced along at about 90 miles per hour before taking the Orchard Road exit and then accelerating to about 100 miles per hour, Baker said.
When the driver slowed down some, the trooper tried to stop the chase using a TVI maneuver, in which he essentially tried to tap the fleeing vehicle in hopes that it would turn sideways and then stop.
The maneuver didn’t work and the chase continued.
The trooper tried the maneuver once more, but the driver avoided him by swerving across the yellow line. There was no oncoming traffic.
The chase continued, and the driver turned northbound into the southbound lane of Denver Tech Center Boulevard.
The trooper tried his maneuver a third time. He succeeded and the driver spun onto a raised median, ending the chase.
Baker said the driver, whose name has not yet been released, will likely face charges of eluding and reckless driving for the high-speed chase.
For the initial hit-and-run, he will likely face charges of careless driving, failure to remain at the scene after a property damage crash and failure to notify the police after a crash, Baker said.
Initial reports indicated that no one was injured during the incident.
