“Route 66 Adventure Handbook” ($19.95, Santa Monica Press) has a fun look to it, with photos on the cover of some of the “offbeat roadside attractions” the book promises to share on the inside. And the guide delivers, offering up natural wonders and vintage lodging on the Mother Road, as well. Author Drew Knowles has a casual style that works well with the subject matter, and his knowledge of all things Route 66, including trivia and cool side trips, seems to be pretty extensive. He also took all of the black-and-white photos, which have a kitschy feel that fits, and the maps are boldly and clearly drawn — very helpful. Kyle Wagner
