A man died and his two children were taken to the hospital Tuesday after an SUV attempting to flee from police crashed in an Aurora park.
At 2:05 a.m., a 2001 silver Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south on South Peoria Street at East Mississippi Avenue when an officer saw the sport utility vehicle run a red light, police said.
The driver stopped, but as the officer approached, the Tahoe sped off.
The Tahoe was spotted later going an estimated 90 mph on Peoria Street. Eventually, police discovered that the SUV had crashed in Del Mar Park.
The driver was found lying about 60 feet behind the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers found two children — a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old — inside the SUV. They were not in car seats or wearing seat belts. They were taken to a hospital and appeared to be uninjured. The driver’s identity had not been released by Tuesday night.
