MIRABEL, Quebec — Defending champion Michelle Wie shot a 4-under-par 68 on Saturday in the Canadian Women’s Open for a share of the third-round lead with Ai Miyazato and Tiffany Joh.
The winner last year at St. Charles in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Wie is trying to become the first player to win the national championship two years in a row since Pat Bradley in 1985-86.
Joh had a 65 and Miyazato shot a 71 to match Wie at 12-under 204. Angela Stanford (66) and Brittany Lincicome (69) were a stroke back, and Cristie Kerr (69), Jiyai Shin (69), Na Yeon Choi (69), Becky Morgan (70) and Song-Hee Kim (71) followed at 10-under.
• Mark Calcavecchia eagled the par-5 18th hole for a 5-under 67 and a share of the second-round lead at the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Wash.
Calcavecchia, winless in 30 starts in two seasons on the Champions Tour, matched Kenny Perry (68), Jeff Sluman (70) and Russ Cochran (71) at 7-under 137.
• UCLA star Patrick Cantlay, the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur, will face Kelly Kraft for the U.S. Amateur Championship after both players advanced in semifinal matches in Erin, Wis.
• Spain’s Ignacio Garrido (69) and England’s Mark Foster (68) share the lead at 11-under 205 going into the final round of the European Tour’s Johnnie Walker Championship in Gleneagles, Scotland.
Wozniacki a winner
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A little rain couldn’t stop top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki from winning her fourth consecutive New Haven title as she defeated Czech qualifier Petra Cetkovska 6-4, 6-1.
Wozniacki, a Dane who is the top seed at next week’s U.S. Open, improved to 17-0 at the tournament.
• American John Isner defeated French qualifier Julien Benneteau 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Open.
Stay Thirsty takes Travers
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Stay Thirsty won the $1 million Travers Stakes to move to the head of the 3-year-old class, taking charge in the stretch and beating Rattlesnake Bridge by 1 1/2 lengths.
Stay Thirsty’s victory came a little more than 30 minutes after his stablemate, Uncle Mo, the early Kentucky Derby favorite, finished second by a nose in the King’s Bishop. It was Uncle Mo’s first start since being sidelined for more than 4 1/2 months with a life-threatening liver disease.
