An off-duty Dillon police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash in Summit County this morning, the coroner’s office said this evening.

Officer Jim Shaffer died from the injuries he suffered in the crash on Heeny Road at about 11:30 a.m. He was airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Lakewood, and died at 4:48 this afternoon, the coroner’s office said.

He was not wearing a helmet and died from head and chest injuries, the office stated.

His brakes locked and he skidded 77 feet into a delineator post in an area of road that shifts from pavement to gravel.

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash, but alcohol is not a suspected factor, according to the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
