BOSTON — Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard will miss the entire 2011-12 NHL season because he is still feeling the effects of post-concussion syndrome.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said “it’s very unlikely Marc will play again.”

Savard was hit by Avalanche defenseman Matt Hunwick on Jan. 22 and missed the rest of the season. It was Savard’s second concussion in 10 months.

• The Columbus Blue Jackets signed defenseman Fedor Tyutin to a six-year contract extension that will pay him $3.4 million a year through the 2017-18 season.

NBA players, owners meet

NEW YORK — Representatives for NBA players and owners returned to the bargaining table Wednesday, meeting for about six hours in just their second bargaining session since the league’s lockout began July 1.

Neither side offered specifics or would say if progress was made, but said they plan many more meetings in hopes of having basketball begin without interruption.

• Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton waived California extradition proceedings and will be returned to Georgia in connection with his arrest in a murder case in Atlanta.

Yao Ming‘s agent asked the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to set aside the former all-star center’s nomination for a later year.

Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari scored 15 points, but it wasn’t enough as Italy fell to Serbia 80-68 at the European basketball championship.

• University of Tulsa’s Damaris Johnson, the NCAA all-purpose yardage record-holder, was charged with one count of felony embezzlement after he allegedly received $2,783 worth of Macy’s merchandise from his girlfriend for $13.34. He has been suspended indefinitely.

• Marshall receiver Troy Evans was charged with four armed robberies near campus and has been suspended indefinitely.

Brent Wooten, who played at Washington and was head coach at Eastern Washington, died Monday after a lengthy illness. He was 72.

• Connecticut moved its home football game against Fordham from tonight to Saturday.

• University of Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun announced he is staying on the job, ending speculation he might retire.

David Moncoutie won a mountain finish to take the 103-mile 11th stage of the Spanish Vuelta, while Bradley Wiggins marked his full return from a broken collarbone at the Tour de France by claiming the leader’s red jersey from Sky teammate Christopher Froome, who is seven seconds behind in second.

• Fox will televise the first English Premier League match on free television in the United States on Super Bowl Sunday, when Chelsea plays Manchester United at 8:30 a.m. MST.
