The Centennial Highway, as the Greeley City Council renamed U.S. 85 a few weeks ago, doesn’t sound like the name of a corridor lined by industrial junkyards and dirt medians.

Most of Greeley’s city officials know the scenery at the entrance and exits to the city along the highway isn’t what residents would like to see, said Becky Safarik, community development director for the city of Greeley.

“This has been on the city’s planning horizon for some time,” Safarik said.

Today, the highway as it enters Greeley from the south is divided by a concrete barrier topped by a sagging chain-link fence. Weeds sprout along the side of the road, and litter blows on the breeze. The north end isn’t much better.
