BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder city officials gave initial approval to a proposal prohibiting medical marijuana businesses from using advertising targeting recreational users of the drug.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports ( ) that the City Council unanimously approved the proposal Tuesday to ban advertising that is “inconsistent with the medical use of medical marijuana.” The proposal faces a public hearing Sept. 20.

Officials say the proposed ordinance tells medical marijuana businesses that their advertising should be directed only to selling the drug for medical use. The city’s licensing clerk would be responsible for determining which businesses have violated the ordinance.
