DENVER—Denver Mayor Michael Hancock says the city will appeal a decision to reinstate two police officers fired after an aggressive videotaped arrest.

Hancock announced Wednesday that the city will “vigorously challenge” the Tuesday decision by the Denver Civil Service Commission to reinstate Officer Devin Sparks and Cpl. Randy Murr. Hancock says the city will also try to stay the officers’ reinstatement pending an appeal.

The March firings followed the release of a video showing the officers throwing Michael DeHerrera to the ground outside a downtown nightclub in April 2009. The officers were fired for lying during an investigation into the arrest.

The commission says the officers were reinstated because a former city manager did not have power to reopen an investigation after suspending the officers for three days for an inaccurate arrest report.
