GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—An organic farm near Rifle has won permission to build what the company says will be Colorado’s largest privately owned solar energy project.
The (Grand Junction) Sentinel reports ( ) that the Garfield County commissioners approved the proposal by Eagle Springs Organic on Tuesday. The company wants to install solar panels on nearly 78 acres on a mesa south of Interstate 70.
Owner Ken Sack says he said he eventually could put up enough panels to generate 19 megawatts. The farm would use 2 megawatts, with the rest sold to utilities or other customers.
Sack said his solar plan could cost about $4 million.
The farm currently includes about 1,200 acres and produces livestock, dairy and produce. Eagle Springs also raises tilapia.
