WESTMINSTER — For five seasons, the Broomfield-Legacy crosstown, cross-classification matchup went just as expected. Class 5A Legacy won each time.
That string ended Friday night at Adams 12 North Stadium, when 4A Broomfield scored the final 17 points to extinguish its drought against Legacy with a 38-23 win.
“We told them that there’s only one team that will beat Legacy for the first time,” Eagles coach Gary Davies said. “We said, ‘It could be you and you could make history.’ “
After a field goal by Travis Baum put Legacy (1-1) ahead 23-21 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, No. 6 Broomfield went to work. A 76-run by Ryan McCulley set up quarterback Angelo Perez’s go-ahead touchdown run, his second of the contest.
Then Broomfield (2-0) received some good fortune on its next drive when Perez fumbled but tight end Dan Perse scooped up the loose ball and scored from 22 yards to push it to 35-23.
While the Eagles got 123 yards on the ground from McCulley, they also unveiled a revamped passing game. Emerging receiver Nick Ongarato caught seven passes for 161 of Perez’s 263 yards through the air.
“We aired it out tonight,” said Ongarato, who opened the scoring with a 42-yard TD catch. “Angelo’s just a junior, and he’s doing great. This will open up our offense because everyone knows Broomfield loves to run the ball.”
Legacy got 158 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Phydell Paris and a nice 40-yard TD strike from Patrick Medina to Cameron McWee late in the first half, but the Lightning couldn’t finish.
“We gave up a couple first downs late that just killed us,” Legacy coach Wayne Voorhees said. “We lost the field-possession battle, and it was both sides of the ball.”
