A woman was shot multiple times across the street from the Denver Rescue Mission early Saturday morning.

Police do not have a suspect in the case that unfolded minutes after midnight near Park Avenue and Lawrence Street.

The unidentified woman was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

A fight started in a parking lot on the 2200 block of Lawrence Street. During the fight someone pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, Jackson said.

“I heard bang, bang, bang, bang,” said a man who was at the Denver Rescue Mission. “It sounded like a semi-automatic.”

Someone at the homeless shelter immediately called police. The suspects were on foot, the man said.

The woman was lying under a crabapple tree. After the shooting, another woman sat in the dirt and lifted the victim onto her lap.

Someone placed a single yellow rose under the tree Saturday morning.

Denver police crime-scene investigators used blue chalk to mark locations across the parking lot where evidence was collected.

Police have not released any information about a suspect. Detectives searched alleys in the area.

The Denver coroner’s office will perform an autopsy and identify the victim.

The woman’s name will be released after someone from the coroner’s office notifies her family members.

Jackson said the area is one of the busiest corridors in Denver, and witnesses may have seen someone running from the crime scene.

He said police would like anyone who may have seen the shooting or people running to call them.

The fight broke out about two blocks from Coors Field following a game between the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants.
