The Spirituals Project brought Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. to Denver last week to salute his longstanding commitment to achieving social justice for all. Gossett accepted the Jericho Award during the Red Gala, a dinner and concert that also included the presentation of Excellence in Service to the Community awards to Gwen Brown, Harold Fields and Maria Guarjardo. Outside of acting, Gossett is active in the Eracism Foundation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the National World War I Museum in Kansas City. The Spirituals Project, based at the University of Denver, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the religious folk songs written and first performed by African-American slaves.
