COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs Utilities is weighing developers’ proposals to build what would be its first wind power project.
The Gazette reports ( ) the utility is reviewing 13 proposals from nine developers to build a 50-megawatt wind farm somewhere in Colorado. The project would represent a small portion of Utilities’ 1,100-megawatt generation capacity.
General manager John Romero says the utility plans to pick a winner this year and have the wind farm running by the end of 2012.
He says cost will be a primary factor in selecting a proposal, but the location of the project and whether it uses turbines made in Colorado could be a tiebreaker.
Under state law, the municipal utility must generate 10 percent of its power from renewables by 2020.
