The Superior woman accused of killing her 6-month-old son last year is too unstable to leave the state mental health hospital to attend hearings in the criminal case against her, doctors there told court officials today.

Stephanie Rochester has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Rochester is accused of using blankets and a plastic bag to kill 6-month-old Rylan because she thought he had autism.

Rochester was not present in court this morning because the clinical director at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo refused to release her. Defense attorney Megan Ring said she was told Rochester is “clearly disabled” and a “danger to herself.”
