Police think Denver businesswoman Catherine Jean O’Toole took off with $18,333 from a business partner in a home- restoration deal in June 2010.
She hasn’t been heard from or seen since, at least not by the police.
O’Toole took the money meant to pay subcontractors from the business partners’ joint account, Denver police said.
O’Toole is 41 and goes by the first name Kate, and she has “been able to elude police,” the department said Wednesday afternoon.
Public records show O’Toole has lived in the Denver area since the early 1990s and previously lived in Minneapolis and Eden Prairie, Minn. Records indicate she is a native of Illinois.
She has no previous criminal record, and she has started a number of Denver-area businesses.
Public records list her as the president of the Rising Phoenix Foundation in the University neighborhood, near the University of Denver, since October 2006.
The Colorado secretary of state’s database shows only that the nonprofit corporation has been dissolved, and it’s not clear from public records what the organization did. Its property has since been sold, and the organization’s telephone number was disconnected Wednesday.
