Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that charred couches, tables and lamps in the storage area of a Lakewood furniture store.
At 11:20 a.m., crews were called to 1295 S. Sheridan Blvd., after people called 9-1-1 and reported smoke billowing from the furniture store, said Scott Rogers, assistant chief of West Metro Fire Rescue.
The Denver Fire Department also sent a full crew, as the store sits just west of the border between Lakewood and Denver.
There were two customers inside the store when the fire started. An employee helped the customers out of the store while the owner searched for a fire extinguisher.
The owner gave up his search and called 911, however, when he realized how large the fire was.
When crews arrived, smoke was coming from the back of the two-story building. Firefighters contained most of the fire to the first floor of the storage area.
While battling the fire, the two departments coordinated by communicating on the same radio channel.
It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
No one was injured.
A loft in the storage area was heavily damaged.
Investigators are waiting to enter the area until crews reinforce the loft to keep it from collapsing.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A new roof was recently installed and electrical work was also being done at the building.
