The first International Federation of Sport Climbing Lead World Cup competition on American soil in more than 22 years takes place Saturday and Sunday at Boulder’s Movement Climbing and Fitness.
The roped event will draw 100 climbers from 25 countries to the Boulder venue, which was built in 2009 with an eye toward hosting international competitions. The IFSC World Cup in Boulder will offer a chance for America’s top climbers — such as Colorado’s Alex Johnson — to challenge the world’s best. (In addition, home countries get 12 athletes, compared with only six for visitors, per IFSC rules.) And with sport climbing short-listed as a possible sport in the 2020 Summer Olympics, the event has taken on a higher level of importance for aspiring climbers.
