WASHINGTON — Officials from Juarez, just over the border from El Paso, said Monday they will sponsor a 16-day program later this month in an effort to repair the city’s blood-stained image as one of the major drug cartel capitals of the country.

Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan told reporters at the Mexican Embassy that Juarez Competitiva is designed to spur economic confidence in the region by promoting culture, arts and political discourse.

He was joined by Carlos Chavira, chairman of the promotion. Chavira said the goal of the program was to inspire younger generations living in the region by helping change their role models in society.
