People using state-issued debit cards for unemployment benefits will see many fees associated with the cards reduced or eliminated, saving users more than $500,000 yearly.

The new fee structured is part of a contract that the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment has renegotiated with J.P. Morgan Chase.

Charges, which go into effect through the month, include:

  •  Elimination of the “point-of-sale” fees for each transaction

  •  Allowing cardholders to withdraw up to $809 within a 24-hour period

  •  Modification of the denied transaction fee policy to allow one free denied transaction for each deposit from the unemployment insurance program.
