PUEBLO — J.B. Mathews scored three touchdowns, including a 75-yard reception from quarterback Ross Dausin, as No. 11 Colorado State- Pueblo defeated Colorado Mines 23-6 on Thursday night at the ThunderBowl.
Mathews, a freshman running back from Rangeview High School, finished with 226 total yards (116 rushing, 110 receiving), and Jesse Lewis also topped the century mark with 125 yards rushing on 25 carries.
Mathews scored from 4 yards out in the first quarter to give the ThunderWolves a 6-0 lead after the extra point was missed.
Dausin’s hookup with Mathews from 75 yards capped a three-play, 85-yard drive that gave CSU-Pueblo a 13-0 lead.
The ThunderWolves got a field goal from Kyle Major late in the second quarter after Mines quarterback Clay Garcia was sacked by defensive end Grant Jansen, who forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Louie Lozano. CSU-Pueblo’s Major then kicked a 29-yard field goal.
The Orediggers finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter, when Dan Palmer capped a 14-play, 87-yard drive with a 1-yard run.
But Mathews restored the ThunderWolves’ 17-point lead with a touchdown scamper from 42 yards in the fourth quarter after Josh Costa halted a Mines drive with an interception. Denver Post staff & wire services
