GLADSTONE, Colo.—A gold mining company is offering to pay more than $6 million to help with the cleanup of former mines.

Sunnyside Gold Corp. told San Juan County commissioners and the federal Bureau of Land Management it wants to help improve water quality in the Animas River.

According to the Durango Herald ( ), the cleanup is focusing on four mines near Gladstone. Officials say the mines are dumping about 800 gallons of contaminated water a minute into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas.
